Frequently Asked Questions:
- Q. Why consult an Independent Counselor?
A. As professionals who have been advising families for over 30 years at both the secondary and collegiate level of education, we know the heightened sense of anxiety that parents feel as their child begins the college selection process. We recognize the fact that the college process is so much more involved and complicated today than in years past and parents often do not legitimately have the time to develop the expertise in this area. We also know the unbelievable demands placed upon high school guidance counselors, as their caseload ratio is often more than 350:1. It is important to note that we, as independent educational counselors, can work closely with your childs school guidance counselor to complement the services offered at your childs high school. This college process, however, necessitates a much more individualized approach to make sure that the college selection matches the needs of the client and that critical deadlines are met. We have the expertise and knowledge in college admissions combined with the time to devote to individualized attention in monitoring the completion of the many steps in the college application process.
- Q. Do we have to participate in all of the workshops or can we pick and choose the ones we want?
A. You are free to choose which workshops or services you want to participate in. However, we strongly recommend that students participate in the entire program, step by step, because we believe it is a process and that one step of the program builds upon the other.
- Q. Do you guarantee admission into all the colleges that my child chooses to apply to?
A. We are only educational consultants and we do not participate in college admissions committee decisions. However, we will work closely with your student to select a list of colleges that will cover three tiers of college choices: reach schools, 50:50, and safety schools. We also will work to help your child develop the best possible application package to enhance his/her chances for admission to their selected schools of choice. However, we can not guarantee admission because we do not make that decision only the college admission committee can make those decisions.
- Q. When should consultations begin?
A. Although consultations may begin at any time during junior or senior year, there are several advantages to scheduling the first meeting late in the sophomore year or early in the junior year as the junior year is a crucial year in the college admissions planning process. Students need to be critically aware of all the facets of the process early in the junior year to allow for flexibility in the scheduling of standardized testing, college visitations, teacher recommendations, and resume enhancement. Earlier inquiries are also encouraged from students and parents concerned about course selection and summer programs during the freshman and sophomore years.
- Q. Will the workshop prices remain the same next year?
A. The prices listed for the CPS101 Courses are only guaranteed for the 2005-2006 school year.
